Test Photoshoot

The following photo's are some pictures I took of my friend Harriet for a test photoshoot. Although she isn't in my film I just wanted to do a test shoot with a girl with dark features like Beki who is going to play Eve in my film trailer and appear in the poster and magazine cover.
My origional plan was to shoot some pictures in the studio with a white background but the studio wasn't set up for me to use. I took the photo's on some stairs in the Arts Centre and against the white walls there to get a simular effect to the studio.
Once I had taken the pictures I edited the lighting, contrast and cut some of the pictures to a more suitable size leaving out odd things i wouldnt want in the shot.
I think taking these pictures has helped me develop skills in creativity or angles and shot poses for my characters and also my editing skills on photoshop.

I like the angle from which I took this picture from. It makes Harriet's eyes appear very large.

I like the lighting in this shot. It flatters Harriet's best features being her large eyes and shiny red hair.

On this shot I decreased the colour and put more of a black and white effect on the picture leaving only a small bit of colour too the picture creating an old fashion camera shot look-a-like.

I reduced the contrast in this picture to create a misty effect.

I directed Harriet to look away from the camera to create a more natural looking photo as if she was just sitting on the stairs and I took a picture off guard.

This was a fun picture to take. I directed Harriet to put her head down and fling her hair back to create a 'swishing' effect on her hair. Then when I edited it on photoshop, I brightened the picture and lowered the exposure.

I took this long shot picture of Harriet to get one of all of her to see what it would look like but i prefer the close up shots I have taken.

I put this picture in black and white because it didn't look very effective in colour. I ajusted the saturation on photoshop.

I did the same on this one. I like the shadow it creates.

For this picture I increased the red colourings to make Harriet hair appear lighter. I also increased the intensity of the exposure.

I put more blue tones on this picture to look like there are some blue lights or a different background.

Teeside Visit

On Monday 6th September the Media Studies group went to Teeside University to enrich our knowledge of how to Use a camera properly, like getting the right focus and making sure we always have the camera level. We were also taught how to make the sound effective in our trailers and how to edit and put together our materials.

Using the camera

Framing- Framing is how close or wide the shot is. Framing is very suggestive and you can use it to
express feelings and situation. e.g. if you have a close up shot of someone then it might suggest that they feel trapped but if you have an extreme long shot of someone it would suggest freedom.

Focus- We were taught how to focus our shots properly. Zooming in on an object that we want to film first then zooming out and filming. We also were taught how to change the shutter speed on the camera. We experimented changing the shutter speed when doing a panning shot to give a 'mesmerized' affect on the shot.

Colour- We changed the white balance on the camera to match the right light in the area we were filming in.

Movement- We shot some shots using panning and tilting shots. We learnt how to adjust the camera so there was the right amount of friction so we could get smooth shots.

Tripods- We learnt how to set up tripods properly ensuring that the .

Lighting- We also adjusted the ND filter of the camera allowing the right amount of light into the shot. We were told the ND filters were like 'sun glasses' for the camera!

Sound- We used a gun mic with a cover over it that looked like a fluffy duster! This was to block out sounds like the wind. We were taught how to position the mic properly too to get the best sound quality.

Editing- I was taught how to log and capture during the editing part of the morning. We used the cutting feature and we layered some clips to have the effect of one clips visual but anothers sound. I will be applying these skills to my work by overlapping sound clips with visuals and cutting certain shots down to make them look quick and create a fast, dramatic pace.

These are some pictures of me and my friends on the visit.

This is a picture of me and my friend Chris deciding and working out what shots we should do and getting a general feel of the camera.

This is me hiding behind the camera! We were learning how to set the camera up here, we went through it step by step making sure we understood how to use it in the right way and what all the buttons were.

This is an image of Chris and I shooting a panning shot of the area. We needed to be very careful to pan the camera round in a steady motion to ensure a smooth shot.

Soundtrack Ideas

The Shadracks are a local band from Scarborough that my band has done a few gigs with before and I really enjoy their music. I asked their permission if it would be ok if I used a couple of their tracks for my trailer because they are perfect and they loved the idea.

This is their official website...

This is their myspace website that has both of the songs on that I am planning on using in my trailer.

I am planning on using;
1. San Antonio
2. Auburn Haired Autumn

If I was allowed the permission to use signed artists, these would be the songs I would use.

Lust for life- Girls

Do you want it all?- Two Door Cinema Club

Something good can work- Two Door Cinema Club

Recce- Locations for shooting

These two pictures are of the street where I want to shoot part of my trailer.
I want shots of my character/characters walking up the street away/ towards the camera.
I have plans of some panning shots up the street as well.
This is the street which I want my character Drew to appear to live on, so it's handy that my Gran lives on the street because I have her permission to use the front of her house and her front door to appear as Drew's front door.

This is a picture of a seating area in a park that I wish to film my two characters sitting on talking.

This is 'Drew's tree'. In my trailer he will be sitting under this tree a few times.
It's his special place where he goes to get away from everything and where he goes to think about things. It's also the place where he takes Eve at the end of the film to play guitar and sing together.

This is in Darlington town center. I will be filming my characters walking through here for my trailer.

Film Magazine Photoshoot

Film Poster Photoshoot Plan

Film Poster Plan

This is an idea for my film poster. I think it might slightly change though. I think the picture of Eve and Drew sitting under the tree would be the same but I think the text on the poster might change slightly. I am thinking about adding a tag line underneath the title and maybe changing how the reviews appear at the bottom of the poster. I think i might just place the reviews over the picture...(the grassy area at the front). Other than that i think I would keep the poster the same.

Film Magazine Cover plan

This is a possible design for my magazine cover for my film. It features the two main characters of my film, with the most important character closer to the camera in the shot. I want to build up my skills to be able to take a really good picture that has the effect of the focus being on Chris and less focus on Beki. (A shallow depth of focus).

Film Posters

These are some on the film posters that I find inspirational and creative.

This poster inspired me because of the bold colours, the large font for the title and the editing of the characters into the word 'BOY' . I also really like the line ' at fifteen all John Lennon needed was love.' On the original sketch of my poster, I didn't have a line like that but after studying this poster I think it's an effective idea and I might try it out.

The control poster is very striking to me. It's very to the point and simplistic but I think that makes it more effective. As the film is in black and white the whole way through, the poster is also going to be in black and white so it's advertising that fact. I also like how the title of the film is in pink. It's striking and different, and maybe suggestive of the fact that the main character, Ian Curtis is feminine? I also like how the text is all at the bottom of the poster rather than spread around so the main focus is on the figure.

In my prezi i have more detailed analysis of these posters.

Film Magazine Covers Textual Analysis

As i need to create a Film Magazine cover to go along with the film trailer itself and a poster for my film i decide to look at some other film magazine covers for inspiration. Here are some film magazine covers that inspired me.

This magazine cover inspired me because of the intensity of the close up shot. Chris Pine plays the character James T. Kirk who is the main character of the film and his character becomes the captain of a spaceship in the movie so this shot shows a fierceness and intimidation a leader would need. This shot really shows the characters personality and role and I wish to do this with my magazine cover because I want my audience to know about my film and the characters within it.
Another thing i love about this magazine cover is the colour pallet. I think the red/black/white/grey colours are sophisticated, serious and smart.

Like the previous magazine cover i like how this one also
has a close up shot of the main character of the film being the actor Jonny Depp who plays Sweeny Todd in the film Sweeny Todd. Also like the previous shot, this shot of Jonny Depp brings out Sweeny Todds character. Although if i was creating a magazine cover for Sweeny Todd I would have used a more darker Background, and maybe a more grungy/gory colour pallet because the character Sweeny Todd is a murderer and blood and darkness are big features in the film. I do prefer the colour pallet to the other magazine as i think it looks more professional than this one. Red is more of an eye catching colour, this light baby blue is associated with babies, therefore I think red would be a better colour for the right audience.

Audience research

For my audience research I decided to make a facebook group to collect data from people because it is a good way of comunicating with people these days.
I got quite a few responses from the people that I invited to the group. Here is the link to the group... to view the questions and feed back click on the 'Discussions' tab.
